Nothing of that, people elected a socialist piece of trash called Hidalgo as a mayor of Paris and Paris has already 7 billions of euros of debt thanks to her.

    Re: Paris is burning

It's started with protests against the raising price of gas, people started a protest movement but without any union organising it, just people. They called themselves the "Gilets Jaunes" ("Yelllow Vests") and started to wear a yellow vest that all drivers here have to have in their car and wear whenever they have to stop on a road. They started blocking the traffic on some roads, etc.
Then they had a big protest on Nov. 23rd. at first it was peacefull (althought there have been some report of police brutality and some videos showing full-geared police hitting on protestors for no reason) but then other folks came and they were rioters, looters, they wanted to fight with the police, etc. So the police fought back, toughly and some protestors were caugh in the middle. The medias and the government pretended the protestors were the ones rioting and looting so the potestors became even more angry and there was another protest on Dec 1 (last sunday) with even more angry protestors. and this time, the rioters had came early and i immediately escalated into violence and some protestors joined the rioters.

The thing is, because the government said rioters and protestors were the same, a lot of people who at first were opposed to the "Yellow Vests" became sympathisers. Today, poll indicates about 75% of poeple support the Yellow Vests.

The roblem is what started as a protest against high oil prices has morphed into something much more vague. Many people have joined the movement with different motivations : some are from the Far-Right, some fom the Far-Left, some want lower taxes, some want higher paychecks, some want Macron to resign, some want a new costitution (and they don't even agree about what this new constitution would lool like).

Another problem is that the movement has no leader, no representatives, it's just a mob. A few days the Prime Minister asked them to send some delegates speak with him. Two came : one asked for his name not to be published i the medias, the other was then called a traitor, received death threats, etc.

Honestly, I'm very concerned 'cause I don't know how this could be de-escalated. I'm not even sure things would come down if Macron would resign. And since there's no leadership, no real organisation, it's almost impossible to know their next moves.

You have to understand that the French, historically, are rebels, revolutionnaries. It's in our DNA, it's a cultural thing here to rebel, protests, take the streets, go on strike, etc. Our nation's History is filled with revolution, protest movement, etc.

    Re: Paris is burning

Johan, I saw a video yesterday where riot police actually took off their helmets and joined the yellow vest protesters

and yeah, that there's no real leadership to speak and negotiate with and it's this amorphous mob makes this extremely volatile.

If you're in the midst of it, you and yours stay safe, man. Same with georges.

Sounds like Occupy Wall Street on steroids.

Johan, I'm a little lost though. Some of these people are upset about oil and fuel prices? Well, how exactly do they think protesting (or rioting) is going to affect the price of a commodity which is priced in dollars and traded in a global market place? Didn't Macron basically get punked by Mohammed Bin Salman just a few days ago? So... if the President of France is of no matter to the Saudis, why would they (or OPEC) care about a bunch of upset people running around Paris?

I'm not expecting you to answer for these people, but do you see what I mean with my questions?

And yeah, you and Georges, and anybody else over there, stay safe.

I totally see it. And your confusion comes from the fact that there's a key element I forgot to tell : part of that oil price raise is because of taxes. But these people don't understand that the taxes only count for 25% of the raise, they think that if the taxes on oil are lowered they will have much cheaper oil.

It’s always fun when you see things like graffiti that reads “ End capitalism now!” written in English in a predominantly French speaking country.

CNN probably wrote it.why report the news when you can create it just how you want it to be instead?

Sounds like Macron needs to ask Jerry Brown how he convinces Californians to peacefully cough up higher taxes and be happy while doing it.

But jokes aside, what you folks are seeing over there is exactly why Obama's "war on coal" made him less popular than Satan in coal states like West Virginia. It's fine to come up with theories on how the environment can be saved. But as these theories are put into action, one has to consider how people's lives might be affected. You can't just force already struggling people into an even harder spot, unless you have some sort of soft transition in place. Right or wrong, once people feel like they're being pushed into a corner, they will get their backs up and start acting crazy.

This has spread beyond Paris and is now countrywide. Tax offices are being firebombed.

Sounds like it's more than just France now.

Yellow Vest Protests Grow in Belgium and The Netherlands

Seems like there's some rumblings in Spain and Italy too. And the Brits seem on the verge of clipping Theresa May's wings over her (mis)handling of Brexit. Hmm, this ain't good.

Let's hope no Austrian Archdukes get shot before the weekend.

Macron's wife remembers the French Revolution, albeit when she was just a little girl. Nevertheless, he could use her counsel right now.

The elites: raise gas taxes for climate change while flying around in private jets.

Disarm their citizens while enjoying personal armed security.

Decry building border walls as racist while hosting cocktail party fundraisers behind the walls of their estates.

Maybe the guillotines are in order.
